In the next three dates, nothing had indicated that Adriana did not forget about what she heard on the beach.

However, just before the birthday party of Adriana’s agent’s best friend and boss, Monica Owen, Adriana brought up this topic. It had almost ruined Jane's plans. It could be said that it was for this particular party she had started a relationship with Adriana.

Monica Owen was Cara’s friend. She was married to a Hollywood mogul and owned a PR agency in downtown LA. Cara had once told Jane about Monica’s grand parties at her swanky mansion in Los Feliz. They have been friends since childhood, and Monica never got tired of trying to impress her childhood friends with her rich and glamorous life. And she almost always invited Cara.

After their last breakup, Cara avoided Jane’s calls and asked her not to write to her. But Jane didn't want to give up on their relationship that easily. She desperately longed to see Cara in person just to tell her that she didn’t mind being just friends with her and that she was willing to do anything to stop Cara from disappearing from her life forever. Knowing that Jane might encounter Cara at the party, she deliberately formed a relationship with someone who could get her invited. Crowds of beautiful women always herded at Monica Owen’s office––aspiring actresses, singers, artists––looking to work or already working for the agency. Pretending to look for an agent as an aspiring screenwriter, Jane had mixed herself among these crowds a couple of times. And that was where she had “hooked up” Adriana. But now she risked her secret revealed and not getting to go to this party.

But Jane got lucky. Adriana didn’t find out Cara was Monica’s friend. She confessed to Jane that she rifled through her office, which made her realize what that woman meant to her.

“You know…” Adriana smirked as they drove to another nightclub. “I looked through your photo album again and also read the final draft of your novel that was on your desk while you were sleeping." She looked at Jane with the eyes of a wounded animal. “Now I know why you nearly had little tears in your eyes when that Hilary said she’d met her and why you were so zealously trying to prove that she was with her sister, not with her lover. As if you desperately wanted to let them know that you are the only woman she would have sex with…”

Jane didn’t respond. She preferred silence to a flimsy excuse, but that antagonized Adriana even more.

“Why are you so silent?” she asked, and without waiting for a reply, she said while lighting a cigarette. “She is gorgeous indeed. The total opposite of me. Blonde, all prim and noble. The beautiful, straight back that she always turns to you... I got that from your book. Don't look at me like that. I didn’t inquire. However, I've been wondering how you look out the window for so long. Deep in your thoughts… even after having sex with me.
